How to Check Your Google Maps Ranking in BC (Without Trusting a Rank Report)
By Built Tough Marketing
The most reliable way to check your Google Maps ranking in BC is to search from where your customers actually are, then confirm it against the calls and direction requests in your Google Business Profile, because a single number in a monthly rank report can't tell you how you show up across Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Surrey. That matters more than usual right now. Since mid-September, many third-party rank-tracking tools have reported unreliable Google data, and one tracking company found that some of the results pages it collected had been deliberately scrambled. If you run a roofing, HVAC, plumbing or landscaping company in the Fraser Valley, here is how to see where you really stand.
TL;DR
Google Maps rankings change with the searcher's location, so "we rank #3" is only true for one spot on the map.
Rank-tracking tools have been unreliable this fall because Google is blocking and misleading the bots that scrape its results.
Spot-check your ranking on a phone, from inside the towns you serve, using the words homeowners actually type.
Your Google Business Profile Performance tab and your call log are the numbers that can't be faked.
Judge your local SEO by calls and booked jobs, not by a position on a report.
Why your Google Maps ranking is different in Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Surrey
Google Maps doesn't have one ranking for your business. It has a different one for every searcher, and the biggest factor is where that searcher is standing.
A homeowner in Sardis who searches "roofer near me" sees the companies Google thinks are closest and most relevant to Sardis. A homeowner in Abbotsford typing the same words sees a different map pack. If your shop is in Chilliwack, you might be first in Chilliwack, fifth in Abbotsford, and missing entirely in Langley, even though nothing about your business changed.
That's why a report that says "roofer Chilliwack: #4" is a thin slice of the truth. It answers one question from one point. The real question is: when people in my service area search for my trade, do they see me?
Are rank reports accurate right now?
Not reliably. This fall, Google has been cracking down on automated scrapers, the bots many SEO tools use to collect ranking data. According to reporting by Search Engine Roundtable on October 12, 2026, Google has been blocking the proxy networks scrapers rely on, adding more captchas and, in some cases, serving scrapers results that look normal but are wrong. Several well-known tools posted notices about missing or inaccurate positions.
None of that changes what real homeowners see. It changes what your report says they see. A sudden drop in your report might be fake. So might a sudden jump.
What to ask your SEO provider
Which tool produces these rankings, and has it posted any data problems since September?
Are these positions for the map pack or the regular results below it?
From what location is each keyword checked?
Where are the calls and direction requests to go with these numbers?
A provider who can't answer those clearly is grading you on the wrong test.
How to check your Google Maps ranking in the Fraser Valley yourself
You don't need a paid tool to get an honest read. You need a phone, fifteen minutes, and a short drive or a staff member in another town.
Step 1: Pick your real search phrases
Write down five to eight phrases a homeowner would actually type. Trade plus town, and trade plus "near me":
"furnace repair Chilliwack"
"plumber near me"
"concrete contractor Abbotsford"
"electrician Mission BC"
"excavation company Fraser Valley"
Step 2: Search from inside your service area
Map pack results are tied to location, so search on a phone with location turned on, from the town you want to check. Use a private or incognito tab so your own past searches and clicks don't nudge the results. If you can't get to Surrey or Hope, ask a crew member who lives there to screenshot the same searches.
Step 3: Record what a stranger sees
For each search, note whether you appear in the top three map results, how many reviews you show next to competitors, and whether your photos and hours look current. Do this once a month in the same places so you're comparing like with like.
The local search numbers that can't be faked
Rankings are a middle number. What pays for the truck is calls, quote requests and booked jobs. These sources come from Google itself or from your own business, not from a scraper.
Google Business Profile Performance
Open your profile and go to Performance. You'll see calls, direction requests, website clicks and a breakdown of the searches people used to find you. If "furnace repair Abbotsford" is showing up in your search terms and calls are climbing, your local visibility is working, whatever a rank report says.
Google Search Console
Search Console shows the searches that brought people to your website, along with clicks and average position. Filter queries by town names like Chilliwack, Langley or Maple Ridge to see which service areas are actually sending traffic.
Your call log and job sheets
Ask every new caller how they found you, and write it down. Count new-customer calls per month by town. That's the scoreboard. If calls from Surrey are flat while a report says you're climbing there, believe the calls.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check my Google Maps ranking in BC for free?
Search your trade and town on a phone with location on, in a private tab, from inside the area you serve. Then check your Google Business Profile Performance tab for calls, direction requests and the search terms people used.
Why do I rank differently on Google Maps in Chilliwack and Abbotsford?
Google Maps ranks businesses partly by distance from the person searching. The same search in two Fraser Valley towns returns different map packs, so your position changes as the searcher moves.
Is my SEO rank report accurate?
It might not be right now. Since September 2026, many rank-tracking tools have reported unreliable Google data because Google is blocking and misleading automated scrapers. Treat sudden jumps or drops with suspicion and check them against your calls.
What's the best way to measure local SEO for a contractor near me?
Track new-customer calls, quote requests and direction requests by town every month. Those numbers come from Google and your own records, so they reflect what homeowners actually did.
The bottom line
A ranking is a snapshot from one spot on the map. Calls are the result. This fall, with rank reports unreliable, the contractors who know their real numbers are the ones who'll make good decisions about their marketing.
Check your listing from the towns you serve, watch your Performance tab, and count your calls. If your website and Google listing aren't turning searches in your service area into booked jobs, Built Tough builds contractor websites and local presence that make you easy to find, and easy to call, across BC. Marketing that works as hard as you do.
